The limitations of AI in creative design

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has quickly become a tool that people are using more to generate content, creative messaging, imagery and even logos. AI tools are becoming a regularly used source for various people to use due to its speed and ability to produce creative projects at scale. 

AI tools lack originality

AI will not be able to understand the context behind your branding, company culture or emotional impacts brands have on humans. AI tools will generate creative content based on trends, patterns and existing examples from the internet, therefore the creative content it generates will not be original. A professional designer will be able to anticipate how a brand will make people feel when they see it, the colour, message and style all play a part in this.

Strategy drives design

A designer will consider lots of different factors when creating a brand or concept that aligns with the brand’s strategy. Things like brand values, audience needs, business goals, client feedback and internal staff feedback will all go into the strategy behind the concepts a designer will create. AI can suggest options, but it cannot make strategic decisions or prioritise the brand’s long-term vision.

Emotional connection is key

Great design evokes emotion and builds relationships. Human designers can create experiences that connect with people on a personal level, whereas AI lacks this skill. Using a person instead of an AI generated creative asset for your website, logo or campaign will help to incorporate human emotion into the designs and make a bigger impact.

Collaboration and iteration

Creative designers will refine creative assets based on clients feedback and insights collected from their brand, customer or internal staff. An AI source will not be able to collaborate in the same way that a human can as it does not have the emotional intellect to research and adapt the designs to meet the clients requirements perfectly.

Final thoughts

AI tools are fast, efficient and helpful, but they are just that; tools. Good quality creative assets with originality and a well thought out strategy can only be produced by a human creative designer.
